Harris Interactive Reports Low Morale and Motivation in the Last Year

Harris Interactive Reports Low Morale and Motivation in the Last Year

From survey of almost 3000 hiring managers/ HR professionals and 5000 employees (through September 2009):
  • 1 in 4 employees say their morale is low
  • 2 in 5 employees have difficulty staying motivated
  • 1 in 4 do not feel loyal to their employer
  • 2 in 5 say their stress level is high at work
  • 1 in 2 employees has had their workload significantly increased
  • 1 in 5 are not satisfied with the work/life balance
  • 1 in 4 don't think their department is important to top management
How can a company address this?
  •  Increase communication, even formalize a communication schedule.  These times call for more communication not less.
  • Recognize, recognize, recognize.  Recognition is free.  You don't need a big budget to show appreciation.  Verbalize your appreciation, write on Post-it note, send and e-card or e-certificate if there are budget constraints
  • Address problem employees immediately.  Don't let a possible cancer grow.
  • Try flexible work opportunities if possible
  • Give your employees a voice - a sounding board.  Acknowledge the elephant in the room
  • Give your vision of the future and show employees how each department, each task adds value to your company.  Give employees "ownership" of their future.
